Supreme Court Did Not Acquit Orji Kalu – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has described the judgement of the Supreme Court nullifying the conviction of a former governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu, as quite unfortunate and “a technical ambush against the trial”

The apex court ordered a retrial of the case of Kalu, his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited and Jones Udeogu, a former Director of Finance and Account in the government of Abia State.

EFCC in a statement issued on Friday by its Head, Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, while reacting to the judgement of the apex court, said the Commission was prepared for a fresh and immediate  trial of the case because its evidence against Kalu and others were overwhelming.

“The corruption  charges against Kalu still subsist because the  Supreme Court did not acquit him of them.  The entire prosecutorial machinery of the EFCC would be launched in a fresh trial where justice is bound to be served in due course,” the statement reads.

Kalu had bagged a 12 year jail term after a Lagos High court found him guilty of corruption.
